Italian Cuisine Is Now UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, And Here’s Why It Matters
March 4, 2026
December 2025 marked a historic milestone for food lovers around the world.
On December 10, 2025, something remarkable happened in New Delhi. At the 20th Session of UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Committee, Italian cuisine was officially inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity making Italy the "first country in the world" to have its entire national cuisine recognised in this way.
It’s the kind of news that makes you want to sit down, pour a glass of Chianti, and savour a long, slow meal. And at Tuscookany one of Italy’s leading "cooking schools in Tuscany" we couldn’t be more proud.
More Than Recipes, A Way of Life
What makes this recognition so special is what UNESCO chose to honour. The committee didn’t single out any one dish not pasta carbonara, not ribollita, not even the legendary Florentine steak. Instead, the recognition was given to Italian cuisine "as a whole": the rituals, the relationships, the generational knowledge, and the deep respect for ingredients that make Italian food culture unlike any other.
UNESCO described Italian cuisine as “a cultural and social blend of culinary traditions” a communal activity rooted in anti-waste principles, seasonal rhythms, and the passing of skills and memories from one generation to the next. Think of a "nonna" teaching her grandchildren to fold tortellini by hand. Think of the Sunday lunch table, laid with care and surrounded by laughter. Think of the market vendor who knows exactly when the tomatoes are at their peak.
That’s what was recognised. That’s what was deemed worthy of protecting for humanity.
Italy’s Most Formidable Ambassador
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called it a record to be proud of, describing Italian cuisine as “our most formidable ambassador.” And she’s right, Italian food culture reaches every corner of the globe, yet it remains deeply, irreducibly "Italian". Its power lies not in imitation but in authenticity.
This recognition caps a three-year campaign by Italy’s Agriculture Ministry, and it places Italian cooking alongside other beloved traditions on the UNESCO heritage list following earlier recognitions for Neapolitan pizza makers (2017), truffle hunting (2019), and opera singing (2023). With this latest addition, Italy now holds a world record with nine agri-food sector entries on the list.
What This Means for Tuscan Cooking
Tuscany has always been at the heart of Italian culinary identity. This region gave the world bistecca alla Fiorentina, pappardelle with wild boar ragù, ribollita, pici cacio e pepe, and some of the finest olive oils and wines on earth. Tuscan cuisine embodies everything UNESCO recognised: seasonal produce, ancient techniques, communal meals, and an unbroken chain of tradition stretching back centuries.
Here at Tuscookany, our chefs have been living and cooking this heritage their entire lives. When Chef Franco teaches you to make fresh pasta from scratch, Chef Alice walks you through a traditional Tuscan menu from antipasto to dolce, or Chef Paola Baccetti shares the regional secrets she has perfected over a lifetime of cooking in Tuscany, they’re not just sharing recipes. They’re transmitting culture, exactly the kind of intergenerational knowledge UNESCO has now pledged to protect.
If you’ve ever dreamed of taking "Italian cooking classes in Italy", mastering the art of "Tuscan pasta making", or simply understanding what makes Italian food so deeply soulful, this recognition is your invitation to take that dream seriously.
