My October week in Tuscany at Casa Ombuto checked off all the boxes for me for a top notch experience. I learned to make a vast array of Italian dishes from the hands-on lessons taught by chef Paula, the classmates and staff were engaging and fun, the surroundings were gorgeous and serene, and the outings were fun and not "overdone." I think what sets Casa Ombuto apart from other experiences is the easy-going way that the staff delivers an absolutely outstanding experience, never calling attention to themselves, yet delivering arguably five star hotel service in such a relaxed and lovely way. They say in the brochure to bring a car if you want to site see in the mornings, but I would say that it is not necessary. I did rent a car and drive from Arezzo (after a train ride from Florence to Arrezzo) and then didn't get in the car again until the moment I had to leave at the end of the course! A few classmates and I had an outing to Cortona, but we hired a car and driver so we could have wine with lunch! Every night there were wonderful late night discussions and aperitives by the great stone fireplace in the main hall which turned into restful sleep and lanquid mornings so jumping up and heading out seemed unthinkable! I am wishing I was back there even as I type this!
